武州正藍染と作務衣

日本に伝わったのは、飛鳥時代から奈良時代に中国から朝鮮半島を経て伝来されたと言われ、法隆寺や正倉院にも布類が多数保管されています。
時代とともに庶民の暮らしに根付いていき、藍染が武州地方（埼玉県北部）へ伝わったのは、江戸時代の天明期（1780年代）で、当時は農業の閑散期に農家の人々が染色作業を営んだのが始まりと言われています。
武州正藍染は生地を染めるのではなく、糸染めというその名のとおり「糸」を染め、染めた糸で生地を織り上げていきます。そのため、経糸横糸の自然なムラが生じ、経年変化と使う人により、味わい深い藍色の色落ちが愉しめます。

作務衣は、本来、僧侶が日々の掃除や薪割り、畑仕事など寺院を維持するための労働を行う時に着用する被服で、現在の形になった時期ははっきりした記録がないものの、明治以降と言われています。
素材は木綿や麻、ポリエステルなど様々ですが、火を焚いている際に火の粉が飛んでも生地が溶けないのは木綿です。そのため、天然素材である木綿、そして麻も多く用いられているようです。
今では、僧侶だけではなく一般の人からも部屋着として好まれるなど愛好家も多く、作務衣の存在が広がってきています。
